EXPLAINER: How NOTAM caused widespread flight disruptions
DALLAS (AP) — Until Wednesday, few travelers had heard of a Notice to Air Missions, or NOTAM. Nor did they know that the system used to generate those notices could cause widespread travel misery. But they found out fast. The Federal Aviation Administration computer system that compiles and distributes essential safety information for pilots went kaput, leading to flights being temporarily grounded nationwide and touching off a cascading air traffic jam. More than 1,300 flights were canceled and 9,000 delayed by early evening on the East Coast, according to FlightAware. NOTAM has been around for more than a half century and it has evolved from paper to computers. It’s in the process of being updated but it failed in the meantime, along with its backup system.
Pam Smart case getaway driver denied parole supervision end
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A man swept up in a murder case more than 30 years ago will remain under parole supervision. Vance Lattime Jr. was  17 in 1990 when he supplied the car and his father’s gun, which was used to kill Gregory Smart in Derry, New Hampshire. Lattime pleaded guilty to being an accomplice to second-degree murder and served 15 years. He’s been on parole since 2005 and his lawyer says he’s completely rehabilitated. According to a ruling released Wednesday, a judge disagreed and said he must remain under supervision. Pamela Smart was convicted of recruiting her teenage lover to kill her husband, Gregory Smart. Lattime was the getaway driver.
Jimmy Page, Rod Stewart pay tribute after death of Jeff Beck
Fellow rock legends are paying tribute to Jeff Beck, the guitar virtuoso and musical innovator who died Wednesday. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who was also a Yardbirds bandmate and close friend of Beck, called him a “six-stringed warrior” with a “limitless” imagination. Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi called Beck “distinctively brilliant.” Kiss singer and guitarist Paul Stanley says Beck “blazed a trail impossible to follow.” Kinks guitarist Dave Davies and Whitesnake singer David Coverdale both said they are heartbroken over Beck’s death. Rod Stewart credited Beck with bringing him and Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood to the U.S. and that they “never looked back” after that.

Patitz, who was born in Germany, raised in Sweden and later made her life in California, was known as part of an elite handful of top supermodels, appearing in the Michael video along with Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.
Oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor marks 105th birthday
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The oldest living survivor of the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 celebrated his upcoming 105th birthday at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Joseph Eskenazi of Redondo Beach, California, boarded an Amtrak train Friday for the journey. He arrived at the museum Wednesday morning, posing for pictures with six other World War II veterans amid exhibits of beach-landing vessels and aircraft. They were visiting the sprawling museum thanks to the Soaring Valor Program, a project of actor Gary Sinise’s charitable foundation dedicated to aiding veterans and first responders.
Electric vehicles win truck, utility of the year awards
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Electric vehicles took two of three categories for the first time in this year’s North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year awards. Ford’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup won the truck category, while Kia’s EV6 battery-powered EV was named the top SUV. The Integra, a small sedan from Honda’s Acura performance brand, won car of the year. Six of the nine finalists were powered by batteries, and analysts say the more of the awards are likely to go to electric vehicles in the future as the industry spends billions to roll out multiple new models. Fifty automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada are judges for the three awards, which are announced every January.
Florida manatee deaths drop but starvation still a concern
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Manatee deaths dropped in 2022 from a record high the year before, but Florida wildlife officials say chronic starvation caused by water pollution remains a major concern. The state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says preliminary statistics show 800 recorded manatee deaths last year in Florida. That compares with more than 1,100 in 2021. Both numbers are higher than the average annual deaths of the marine mammals. The new numbers come as state and federal officials are feeding thousands of pounds of romaine lettuce to manatees at a warm-water power plant on Florida’s east coast in an effort to slow manatee starvation deaths.
Polish officials say WWII trove of Jewish objects rare find
LODZ, Poland (AP) — Officials in central Poland say the recent discovery of objects that were most likely hidden by their Jewish owners during World War II has provided a rare and precious find. Around 400 items, including silver-plated menorahs, hanukkiahs and tableware, were uncovered in the city of Lodz last month during the renovation of a house and yard. The city’s mayor said Wednesday that the owners had buried the objects in the ground and probably assumed they would be able to return for them but instead most likely died in the Holocaust. The items were packed in a wooden box and wrapped in newspapers. Officials said they will be transferred to the city’s Archaeology Museum.
New Mega Millions jackpot of $1.35B is game’s 2nd highest
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Mega Millions prize has grown again to an estimated $1.35 billion after there was no winner of the lottery’s latest giant jackpot. The numbers drawn late Tuesday night were: 7, 13, 14, 15, 18 and gold Mega Ball 9. Mega Millions says the prize for the next drawing on Friday night is the second highest in the game’s history. There have been 25 drawings over three months since the last time a player matched all six numbers and claimed the jackpot. The estimated $1.35 billion jackpot prize would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Nearly all jackpot winners take a cash payout, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated $707.9 million.
