Tatjana Patitz, supermodel of ’80s and ’90s, dies at 56
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — One of an elite group of glamorous supermodels who graced magazine covers in the ’80s and ’90s and appeared in George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” music video, Tatjana Patitz has died at age 56. Patitz’s death was confirmed by her New York agent, Corinne Nicolas, who said the cause was illness, but did not have further details. Patitz, who was born in Germany, raised in Sweden and later made her life in California, was known as part of an elite handful of top supermodels, appearing in the Michael video along with Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.
Oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor marks 105th birthday
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The oldest living survivor of the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 celebrated his upcoming 105th birthday at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Joseph Eskenazi of Redondo Beach, California, boarded an Amtrak train Friday for the journey. He arrived at the museum Wednesday morning, posing for pictures with six other World War II veterans amid exhibits of beach-landing vessels and aircraft. They were visiting the sprawling museum thanks to the Soaring Valor Program, a project of actor Gary Sinise’s charitable foundation dedicated to aiding veterans and first responders.
Electric vehicles win truck, utility of the year awards
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Electric vehicles took two of three categories for the first time in this year’s North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year awards. Ford’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup won the truck category, while Kia’s EV6 battery-powered EV was named the top SUV. The Integra, a small sedan from Honda’s Acura performance brand, won car of the year. Six of the nine finalists were powered by batteries, and analysts say the more of the awards are likely to go to electric vehicles in the future as the industry spends billions to roll out multiple new models. Fifty automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada are judges for the three awards, which are announced every January.
Florida manatee deaths drop but starvation still a concern
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Manatee deaths dropped in 2022 from a record high the year before, but Florida wildlife officials said Wednesday that chronic starvation caused by water pollution remains a major concern. Preliminary statistics show 800 recorded manatee deaths last year in Florida, according to the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. That compares with more than 1,100 in 2021. Both numbers are higher than the average annual deaths of the marine mammals. The new numbers come as state and federal officials are feeding thousands of pounds of romaine lettuce to manatees at a warm-water power plant on Florida’s east coast in an effort to slow manatee starvation deaths.
Polish officials say WWII trove of Jewish objects rare find
LODZ, Poland (AP) — Officials in central Poland say the recent discovery of objects that were most likely hidden by their Jewish owners during World War II has provided a rare and precious find. Around 400 items, including silver-plated menorahs, hanukkiahs and tableware, were uncovered in the city of Lodz last month during the renovation of a house and yard. The city’s mayor said Wednesday that the owners had buried the objects in the ground and probably assumed they would be able to return for them but instead most likely died in the Holocaust. The items were packed in a wooden box and wrapped in newspapers. Officials said they will be transferred to the city’s Archaeology Museum.
New Mega Millions jackpot of $1.35B is game’s 2nd highest
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Mega Millions prize has grown again to an estimated $1.35 billion after there was no winner of the lottery’s latest giant jackpot. The numbers drawn late Tuesday night were: 7, 13, 14, 15, 18 and gold Mega Ball 9. Mega Millions says the prize for the next drawing on Friday night is the second highest in the game’s history. There have been 25 drawings over three months since the last time a player matched all six numbers and claimed the jackpot. The estimated $1.35 billion jackpot prize would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Nearly all jackpot winners take a cash payout, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated $707.9 million.
Divisive influencer Tate loses appeal against asset seizures
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A court in Romania’s capital Bucharest has ruled against an appeal by the divisive social media personality Andrew Tate who challenged asset seizures by prosecutors who are investigating him on charges of being part of an organized crime group and human trafficking, an official said Wednesday. Tate, 36, was initially detained on Dec. 29. in Bucharest along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian women, all of whom lost an appeal Tuesday to be released from detention. In a separate hearing Wednesday at the Bucharest Tribunal Tate lost an appeal challenging assets seized by prosecutors in the case.
Lizzo, Swift and Styles lead iHeartRadio Award nominations
NEW YORK (AP) — Lizzo, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles lead the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards nominations with seven nods each. Jack Harlow and Drake are close behind with six each. The iHeartRadio Music Awards honor the most played artists of the year on their stations and app. Fans can vote in several categories including best fan army, best lyrics, best cover song and best music video. For top song of the year, Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” faces off against Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” Styles’ “As It Was,” Justin Bieber’s “Ghost,” Doja Cat’s “Woman,” “Glass Animals’ ”Heat Wave,” Latto’s “Big Energy,” Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow’s “Industry Baby,” Harlow’s “First Class,” and Imagine Dragons’ “Enemy.”
Northern California sees more rain while the south dries out
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Storm-ravaged California is scrambling to clean up and repair widespread damage. A new storm entering the state Wednesday is expected to be limited to the north while the south gets a break. Crews are working to reopen roads closed by rockslides, swamped by flooding or smothered with mud. More than 10,000 people who were ordered out of seaside towns on the central coast were allowed to return home Tuesday. Yet thousands of people living near rain-swollen creeks and rivers remain under evacuation orders, including some 4,000 residents of Planada in the San Joaquin Valley, where neighborhoods were under water. Gov. Gavin Newsom says at least 17 people have died in storms since late December.
Suspects in rapper XXXTentacion’s death about to face trial
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — More than four years after gunmen killed emerging rap star XXXTentacion during a robbery outside a South Florida motorcycle shop, three suspects are about to go on trial. Jury selection begins Jan. 18 in Fort Lauderdale. Shooting suspect Michael Boatwright and his accused accomplices, Dedrick Williams and Trayvon Newsome, could all receive life sentences if convicted of first-degree murder. They have pleaded not guilty. A fourth man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year and is expected to testify against them. Jury selection is expected to last three weeks. The trial is expected to last into March.
