Computer breakdown sows chaos across US air travel system
NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of flights across the U.S. were canceled or delayed after a system that offers safety information to pilots failed. The government launched an investigation into the breakdown, which grounded some planes for hours. The Federal Aviation Administration said preliminary indications traced the outage to a damaged database file. The agency said it would take steps to avoid another similar disruption. The breakdown showed how much American air travel depends on the computer system that generates alerts called NOTAMs — or Notice to Air Missions. Before a plane takes off, pilots and airline dispatchers must review the notices, which include details about weather, runway closures or other factors.
Source: Biden team finds more docs with classified markings
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s legal team has discovered additional documents containing classification markings. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The revelation comes days after an attorney for the president said Biden’s lawyers had discovered a “small number” of classified documents at his former office space in Washington. The person who spoke to the AP Wednesday on condition of anonymity says the legal team found the additional material at a second location. The person would not say when or where the material was found or provide specific details about the level of classification of the documents.
Battle rages in Ukraine town; Russia shakes up its military
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The fate of a devastated salt-mining town in eastern Ukraine is hanging in the balance. Ukraine says its forces are holding out against a furious Russian onslaught in one of the fiercest and bloodiest recent ground battles of the nearly 11-month war. Soledar is under heavy shelling by Russian forces using jets, mortars and rockets. Ukraine’s deputy defense minister on Wednesday denied Russian claims that Soledar had fallen. In an apparent recognition of battlefield setbacks, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the replacement of the head of Russian forces in Ukraine. The former chief was demoted to deputy after three months on the job, signaling that President Vladimir Putin wasn’t fully satisfied with his performance.
Jeff Beck, guitar god who influenced generations, dies at 78
NEW YORK (AP) — A guitar virtuoso who pushed the boundaries of blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, Jeff Beck has died. He was 78. His representatives said in a statement Wednesday that Beck died Tuesday after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis. Beck influenced generations of shredders along the way and becoming known as the guitar player’s guitar player. Beck first came to prominence as a member of the Yardbirds and then went out on his own in a solo career that incorporated hard rock, jazz, funky blues and even opera. He was known for his improvising, love of harmonics and the whammy bar on his preferred guitar, the Fender Stratocaster.
Rights group: Litany of crises in 2022 but also good signs
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A leading rights group says widespread opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the power of a unified response against human rights abuses. Human Rights Watch says in its annual world report that there are also signs that power is shifting as people take to the streets to demonstrate their dissatisfaction in Iran, China and elsewhere. It says a “litany of human rights crises” emerged in 2022, but the year also presented new opportunities to strengthen protections against violations. The report covers human rights conditions in more than 100 countries and territories.
Going home: Bills’ Hamlin released from Buffalo hospital
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been released from a hospital in Buffalo nine days after he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated during a game at Cincinnati. Hamlin went home home after spending two days undergoing tests at Buffalo General Medical Center. He was transferred to Buffalo after spending last week at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where the 24-year-old experienced what doctors called “a remarkable recovery.” Neither doctors nor the Bills disclosed the results of the tests Hamlin had. Doctors said he will continue his rehabilitation with the Bills.
Brazil rioters plotted openly online, pitched huge ‘party’
MIAMI (AP) — The rioters who stormed Brazil’s capital buildings on Sunday used coded language on social media to coordinate and carry out their plans in plain view. Organizers on Telegram urged supporters of the defeated president Jair Bolsonaro to attend what they called a “beach trip” and even offered help finding bus transportation. Some rioters then used YouTube to livestream the uprising, racking up hundreds of thousands of views before the channels were shut down. Just as the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol did, the Brazilian riots demonstrate how social media makes it easier than ever for anti-democratic groups to recruit followers and transform online rhetoric into offline action.
White House: Jill Biden has two cancerous lesions removed
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says surgeons have removed a cancerous lesion above first lady Jill Biden’s right eye and one on her chest, and that a third lesion on her left eyelid is being examined. Presidential physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor says examinations confirmed that the lesions over Biden’s right eye and on her chest were basal cell carcinoma. That’s the most curable form of skin cancer. It’s a slow-growing cancer and usually confined to the skin’s surface. It seldom causes serious complications or becomes life-threatening. O’Connor says the first lady “is in good spirits and is feeling well” but experiencing some facial swelling and bruising. She returned to the White House Wednesday evening.
Peru anti-government protests spread, with clashes in Cusco
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Protests against Peruvian President Dina Boluarte’s government that have left 47 people dead since they began a month ago are spreading through the south of the Andean country with new clashes reported in the tourist city of Cusco. Health officials in Cusco said 16 civilians and six police officers were injured after protesters tried to take over the city’s airport. Protests and road blockades against Boluarte and in support of ousted President Pedro Castillo were also seen in 41 provinces, mainly in Peru’s south. The unrest began in early December following the ouster and arrest of Castillo following attempt to dissolve Congress and head off his own impeachment.
GOP opens long-promised investigation into Biden family
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans have opened their long-promised investigation into President Joe Biden and his family. They are wielding the power of their majority to demand information from the Treasury Department and former Twitter executives as they lay the groundwork for public hearings. The Republican-led Oversight Committee requested financial information from the Treasury Department surrounding financial transactions members of the Biden family made, as well as testimony from multiple former Twitter executives, who were involved in the company’s handling of an October 2020 story from the New York Post about the president’s son. A White House spokesperson called the investigation a “political stunt.”
