On Monday, February 21, local dailies extensively covered the political formations ahead of the August 9 General Election. The latest development is the Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka crafting a pre-election deal with his ODM counterpart Raila Odinga.

The publications also highlighted the divorce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, and the latter's allies calling for Uhuru's resignation.
The daily dissected the unceremonious fallout between Uhuru and Ruto almost a decade since they took the presidency with much glee and pomp.
The duo's first term in 2013 was peaceful and seamless, capitalising on their camaraderie to secure re-election in 2017.

Things, however, took an ugly turn (to the detriment of Ruto) in 2018 when Uhuru reached a ceasefire with his then arch-rival, ODM leader Raila Odinga, who had disputed the president's win in the 2017 vote.

Kenyan Newspapers Review: Showdown Looms as Uhuru, Ruto Threaten to Reveal Each Other’s Dirty Secrets
Since the Uhuru-Raila truce, Ruto gradually detached himself from the administration in which he serves as the second in command.
He is said to have shifted focus from his office housed in the Harambee Annex, Nairobi, to his Karen residence, which has played host to numerous political delegations.
Uhuru allies have been on record calling for Ruto's resignation owing to his "absconding of duties" as the president's principal assistant.
The deputy president's allies have however dismissed the calls, stating that Ruto is not in the office at the mercy of his boss, further claiming that he had a significant contribution in Uhuru's election and re-election in 2013 and 2017 respectively.

Newspapers Review: Raila’s State House Hopes High as Uhuru Starts Clearing Path for Him in Mt Kenya
The publication reported on the buzz caused by Raila and Kalonzo's meeting in Mombasa.
The ODM boss who is at the coast for a four-day political tour reportedly met the Wiper leader on Sunday, February 20, at a five-star hotel, the meeting fueling speculation about their reunion after partnering in the 2013 and 2017 elections.
Also reported to have attended the meeting was KANU party leader Gideon Moi, a co-principal in the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) alongside Kalonzo, Martha Karua (Narc Kenya) and Cyrus Jirongo (UDP).
Although the details of the meeting were not shared with the public, a source intimated to People Daily that the conversation centred on "a possible formation of a super coalition bringing together One Kenya Alliance and Azimio la Umoja".

The meeting came three days after Kalonzo hinted at working with the ODM leader who is seeking the presidency for the fifth time.
Kalonzo was Raila's running mate in 2013 when they vied for presidency under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD).
They partnered again in 2017 in the same pecking order under the now-defunct National Super Alliance (NASA).
The Standard delved into the much-anticipated Uhuru's meeting at the Sagana State Lodge on Wednesday, February 23.
The president is expected to use the meeting in giving his reasons for backing his handshake partner at the expense of the deputy president.

According to the publication, government administration, clergy and youth leaders from Mt Kenya have been charged with inviting these to attend the meeting.
Over 30,000 guests are expected to attend the meeting, sources told The Standard.
The agenda, according to the organisers, will solely be on the unity of the region and the reason behind the fallout between the president and his deputy.
The meeting will precede Jubilee Party's NDC slated for February 25 and 26. The party is expected to endorse Raila for the August 9 presidential contest.

Kenyan Newspapers Review: Anne Waiguru Tells Uhuru Mt Kenya Has Moved On, Is Fully Behind UDA
The Swahili newspaper had space for the intrigues around Raila-Kalonzo possible reunion following their meeting in Mombasa.
As earlier indicated, the two leaders met at a five-star hotel in the coastal city on Sunday, February 20, the agenda of the meeting being the August 9 elections.
Raila and Kalonzo partnered in the 2013 and 2017 elections, which they lost to the Uhuru-Ruto formation.
The two will be merging Azimio la Umoja and One Kenya Alliance (OKA) should they agree to partner.
The daily's front page indicated that Uhuru will be witnessing the crafting of a pre-election partnership deal between the OKA and Azimio la Umoja formations.
According to The Star, OKA will attend a joint ODM and Jubilee delegates meeting set to be held on Saturday, February 26.
It is during the meeting that the deal will be formally inked.

Also to attend the meeting will be Karua, Senator Moi and Jirongo who are all co-principals in OKA.
Raila and Kalonzo will be partnering for the third time after 2013 and 2017.
It is, however, not clear the slots Kalonzo and his OKA team will be allocated in the coalition.
