The Media Council of Kenya has today notified members of public and all security officers that accredited journalists and media practitioners are authorised to use mobile/smart phones as professional media equipment.
In a statement through CEO David Omwoyo, the council said it had noted there have been disputes between a section of security officers and leaders on the use of smart phones to record and transmit news from public events.

Omwoyo pointed out that with the advancement in technology, mobile phones are now bieng used to not only take photos and videos but also to record voice clips and undertake live broadcasting including live links by Media.

MCK however, asked journalists to adhere to the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism as provided under schedule 11 of the Media Council Act 2013.
The schedule provides for the use of technological tools and prohibits use of hidden cameras unless there is no other access option to news.
The Council has encouraged training institutions, media organisations and professional support groups to escalate the inclusion of the use of smart phones as tools of journalistic practices in their training curricular as a matter of priority.

Omwoyo added that the impact of digital technologies has affected the operations of traditional new and converged media formats.
This statement comes in the wake of of the assault of Daily Nation journalist Mwangi Muiruri who was attacked by security officers attached to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's wife, Dorcas Gachagua
The scuffle started when one officer pulled the journalist back as he tried to record the event with his mobile phone.
Though Muiruri had a job tag with a labelled lanyard around his neck, the officer demanded that he stop recording as Dorcas distributed food at the chief's camp in the Greystone area.
He told the officer that recording the activities on his mobile phone was part of his job.
But this irked the hawkeyed officers, who clobbered him after snatching his phone from him.
The tussle continued for a few minutes before one officer slapped Muiruri, prompting the intervention of his colleagues.

One of the officers, upon noticing that they had been recorded, grabbed the phone of another Nation reporter and deleted a video recording of the encounter in an attempt to conceal the evidence before returning the phone.
