Daily Nation reports that Karanja had intended to take dowry to his girlfriend's home in Nyahururu, unaware that he would never live to see the day come true.
According to his family, the stolen cash was also inclusive of the weekly payment for his suppliers.
On the fateful day, the 34-year-old did not open his shop in the morning as is the norm, he instead woke up and went to Limuru town to withdraw the money.
He stashed the money in an envelope, slid it into his pocket, the put on a dust coat to conceal whatever he was carrying.
On the way back to his shop, which was barely four kilometres from his home, he greeted his elder brother Peter Gaiko and proceeded to open the premises.
Shortly after, gunshots were heard, followed by loud screams from Karanja's shop, after which Gaiko saw neighbours rushing towards him.

Karanja was rushed to Ndeiya Health Centre while still clinging to life but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
Witnesses disclosed that the deceased was accosted by two men riding on a motorbike, one of them wielding a rifle.
It was during the scuffle that the gun-toting thug pulled the trigger before pulling the money from his right pocket and riding away.
The screams were from a woman who worked in his shop after she noticed that the businessman had been gunned down.
