Medical services might be paralysed in January 2023 following an industrial action by doctors across the country.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) reiterated that doctors will down their tools if the government will not hasten the implementation of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in totality.
The union's tough-talking Secretary General Davji Bhimji decried that despite issuing a strike notice early this month, not much has been done by the national and county governments to address the matter.

Among the issues that the union want to be implemented as captured in the 2017-2021 CBA is the promotion of medical doctors to their right job groups.
The union also wants 1200 doctors to be employed each year as agreed.
Davji said 60% of graduate doctors, approximately 5000, have not been employed. He regretted that some medics have left for other countries to look for better offers while some have changed their careers.
He said if the government will not employ doctors, the union will facilitate them to go to other countries "where they are appreciated".

The union also wants adequate and standard Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and medicine to be provided in all healthcare facilities in Kenya.
As captured in the CBA, the doctors want prompt posting of interns and post-graduate training.
Also, the doctors want the elements negotiated on the basic salary fulfilled. This includes risk, non-practice, extraneous and emergency call allowances.
The doctors also want comprehensive medical insurance to be provided to all doctors in Kenya.
In other news, Bhimji disclosed that hospitals in parts of the country use medical students on internships as main doctors.
